Mike Pelfrey gave up five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Mike Pelfrey didn't look like the Mets ace during his 4 1/3 inning outing on Opening Day in Florida against the Marlins. Pelfrey gave up a grand slam to John Buck in the fourth inning, putting the Mets in a 4-0 hole against Josh Johnson. Last season, the Mets gave up 12 grand slams as a team and Pelfrey served one up on Opening Day. Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Willie Harris broke it up with a leadoff double.
One of the two bright spots for the Mets in the loss was that Carlos Beltran had an RBI double in the seventh inning. Beltran turned on an inside pitch from Johnson and pulled a line drive down the right field line to drive in the Mets first run of the season. Beltran battled knee soreness during Spring Training and his left knee will be something to watch throughout the season.
The other bright spot was that Pedro Beato threw two scoreless innings in relief. The Rule 5 pick made his Major League debut and gave up leadoff hits in the two innings he threw but was able to get out of the innings without giving up a run. He gave up three hits in the two innings and looked impressive with a low-to-mid 90s fastball.
The Mets take on the Marlins in game two of the three game series, sending Jon Niese to the mound to take on Ricky Nolasco.
