The Farmingdale State baseball team captured their third consecutive Skyline Conference Championship this season. The Rams entered the playoffs as the #1 seed after a 15-1 conference record and won three straight games, including two over rival Old Westbury. With the win, the Rams advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament and were selected as the sixth seed for the New York Regional. Farmingdale State defeated Oneonta 9-5 in game one, before falling to St. John Fisher and Castleton State to be eliminated from the tournament.
Farmingdale State possessed a very deep and talented offense this season as 12 regulars hit .300 or higher, including senior Vinny Block (Chaminade), freshman Terrence Bohonan (Patchogue-Medford), junior Gibran Bracamonte (Grand Street Campus), junior Kevin Curtis (Riverhead), freshman Chris Longo (Commack), sophomore Ryan McAllister (Rocky Point), senior Donny Moscatelli (Massapequa), senior Zak Nersesian (Nyack), junior Ryan Rubenstein (St. Anthony's), senior Frank Yera (Grand Street Campus) and freshman David Zilnicki (Riverhead). Junior Matt Weingartner (Clarke) hit over .400 in his 71 at-bats with 29 hits and 30 runs scored. Sophomore Chris Phelan (Patchogue-Medford) led the pitching staff with six wins, 67 innings pitched and 62 strikeouts and had a 0.74 earned run average in conference play. Senior Ian Solomon (Northport) and freshman Vinny Messana (Centereach) each had four wins with Messana striking out 50 batters in 41 innings pitched. Junior J.R. Lott (St. John the Baptist) had a 3-0 record and posted an ERA of 2.89, while senior Mike Biasi (Copiague) was solid in relief with a team low 1.37 ERA in 15 appearances. Nersesian, Zilnicki, Yera, senior designated hitter Mike Labrozzi (Pierson) and Phelan were each selected First Team All-Skyline Conference this season, while Curtis, McAllister and senior Steve King (Freeport) were named to the Second Team. Bohonan was named the Skyline Rookie of the Year and Coach Osik received Coach of the Year honors. Nersesian was also named to the ABCA/Rawlings New York Region Third Team. The Rams will see 12 players depart from the team this year, but have the talent to keep the Championship streak alive in 2011.
